A Prayer for Peace, A Call for Connection

A Prayer for Peace, A Call for Connection

I’ll close with a picture my husband took while we were sitting by the pool, overlooking the Mediterranean. It’s a peaceful image—one that reflects my prayer for peace.

I had originally planned to write Blog #7 about the importance of connection, inspired by the seven glorious days my husband and I spent on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. We swam in the Mediterranean, wandered the charming streets of Positano and Capri, and lingered over long dinners filled with delicious food and breathtaking sunsets.

When I returned home, I thought my next blog would be about slowing down—taking time to listen, to savor life, and to truly connect with friends and loved ones. That message felt closely tied to my programs, which give self-advocates the chance to have fun, while also creating space for self-advocates and their parents to talk, share, and connect with one another.

But just as I was preparing to write, the shocking and horrific event at Utah Valley University occurred.

I remember the moment so clearly: I was setting up my phone on a tripod, ready to go live with Making Dinner with Stacy, when I received the news. I felt numb. Yet there I was, with all the ingredients and cooking tools laid out on my counter, and some of my favorite people ready to cook alongside me. Despite a few technical hiccups, the online class went beautifully. Everyone shared photos of the delicious meals they created, and I realized how much joy and strength I draw from spending time with my self-advocate friends—especially during times of sadness.

In the days that followed, the weight of the tragedy lingered. My hope and prayer is that our college campuses can once again be places where open, respectful, and civil dialogue thrives.

I’ll close with a picture my husband took while we were sitting by the pool, overlooking the Mediterranean. It’s a peaceful image—one that reflects my prayer for peace.
