A Look Back at 2025
Meaningful moments from 2025—and how they’re shaping the goals for the year to come.
Stacy Engels
In the summer of 2025, FPBS launched its first In-Person Book Club. Each week, five to six friends gathered at Starbucks in Oakton to read short stories from What Do You Want on Your Pancakes?—a collection of accessible, relatable stories about everyday life for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Participants took turns reading aloud and then shared their thoughts through guided discussion questions. Building on the success of this group, I’m already planning exciting enhancements for Summer 2026, including a new Magic Tree House–themed In-Person Book Club.
In September 2025, FPBS introduced Cook, Share, Care at King of Kings Church in Fairfax. Once a month, six to seven participants come together to prepare meals for local charities such as the Lamb Center in Fairfax and Second Story in Vienna, along with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the Embry Rucker Shelter in Reston. After cooking, the group sits down to enjoy the same meal they prepared for others. Dishes in 2025 included egg and veggie casseroles, chicken, broccoli, and rice casserole, and turkey skillet meals. Cook, Share, Care beautifully combines giving back, learning practical cooking skills, and building social connections—and it will continue throughout 2026.
Also in September, FPBS launched Monday Fundays, created specifically for adults with an IDD who have graduated from public school programs and often have unstructured Mondays. When the weather is nice, Monday Fundays focus on movement and outdoor fun—walking on the W&OD Trail, playing I Spy, searching for colorful leaves during our Fall walks, or even enjoying pickleball at local parks. One favorite addition included making smoothies together using a cordless NutriBullet.
When colder temperatures arrive, creativity takes center stage. Indoor activities such as board games at the Vienna Community Center have been a hit, and in 2026, I’m excited to add bowling to the mix.
Goals for 2026
Looking ahead, FPBS plans to expand Friday Night Socials with quarterly Pizza and Bowling nights, adding to our already popular Pizza and Bingo events. I’m also looking forward to offering Smoothie and Sandwich Clinics, giving participants more opportunities to build independence and practical life skills.
As 2026 unfolds, my goal remains the same: to create innovative, inclusive, and meaningful in-person programs that foster friendships, confidence, and joy. I can’t wait to see what we’ll build together in the year ahead.
